Piia Jalkanen

Piia Jalkanen is a Helsinki-based interior architect, designer and maker whose practice moves between art, design and exhibition architecture. Alongside her independent practice, she teaches arts and crafts to vocational students specialising in artisan skills.

Her way of seeing the world is deeply rooted in North Savo, northeastern Finland, and the forests surrounding her grandmother’s home. These landscapes, memories and traditions of making continue to shape her work through a lasting connection to material, place and time.

Jalkanen is interested in the lives of objects, where they come from, what they carry and how their meaning evolves over time. Her practice is guided by a belief in sustainable aesthetics, the value of craftsmanship and the importance of creating things to be lived with, cared for and passed on.

For Jalkanen, design is a way of exploring the relationships between material, space, people and time, making, questioning and discovering new connections while remaining grounded in the past and open to what lies ahead.

Keski-Pomppu

Their work combines a strong aesthetic sensibility with a thoughtful approach to materials, craftsmanship and sustainability. Moving fluidly between disciplines, they create objects, spaces and environments that bring together artistic exploration, material understanding and a lasting approach to design.
